Mandarin producers from the Neretva Valley of Croatia attended a study tour to visit citrus producers in Southern Italy to learn about the financial and marketing benefits of geographical indications (GIs). The tour was from 5 to 9 March 2012 and was sponsored by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and FAO. On the tour the group met various citrus producers, packagers and processors and spoke to representatives of the citrus GIs that exist in southern Italy. In the end, the Croatian producers left with an understanding of the GI creation and registration process, the necessity of working with each other to formulate such a GI, and the financial benefits of participating due to the marketing and tourism potential associated with a GI.
